Never settle for average, aspire to be exceptional!
After several conversations with high school and collegiate coaches, the common topic of what kids are lacking when they enter high school is a solid set of fundamentals. It seems the emphasis in today’s youth development programs is focused too much on playing games and less on the actual skill development needed to continue to excel at the next level.
Our goal is to get better each day, in everything we do. To leave no doubt that we have put everything we can into each day knowing that the end result will be a reflection of our combined efforts on and off the court.
Success is more than just wins and loses. It’s about developing successful individuals who grow to achieve greatness as both an individual and a teammate. It takes a special person to succeed in basketball and in life. It is through basketball that we hope to instill these values and traits to create special people who will become successful adults.
The values and traits we strive to instill are a positive attitude, a strong work ethic, self-confidence, and perseverance. These will help build success in basketball and in life itself.
Positive Attitude:
Our attitude is a choice we make every day, it is something that we can always control. A positive attitude can help us overcome seemingly impossible obstacles. Positive people embrace challenges and do not view them as roadblocks. Positive people bounce back more quickly from the set-backs or “lose” in life. The best aspect about being positive is that it’s contagious. One positive player can create a team of positive players who are difficult to defend!
“Make each day your masterpiece.” -John Wooden
Work Ethic:
Work ethic like our attitude are two qualities we can control and are not limited by skill level. Similar to having a positive attitude, the amount of effort each player exerts is also a choice that is made every day. Little in basketball comes easy, if it did, everyone would compete. Intensity and hard work will be asked of all players each time they step foot on the court. Knowing the value of a strong work ethic will help all of us be successful beyond basketball. Our effort will never be questioned and we will earn everything.
“Most people have the will to win; few have the will to prepare to win.” -Bobby Knight
Self-Confidence:
We live in a competitive society and the game of basketball is a great way to practice how we handle such competition. We need to be aware that often our toughest competition comes from ourselves. There is a voice in all of us that tells us to take a break or to ease up a little, that we are not good enough, that we’ll never make it, or that we should give up and quit. Successful individuals recognize this voice and are able to ignore it, overcoming the inside pressure to fold.
“Don’t let what you cannot do interfere with what you can do.” -John Wooden
Perseverance:
Perseverance is defined as continued effort to do or achieve something despite difficulties, failure, or opposition. Everyone will make mistakes or experience failure in life but we must learn from these situations and continue to move forward. Basketball is a sport that will be full of challenges and adversity just as our lives will be. Being committed to a cause and having the strength to persevere in the end is a key to our ultimate success.
“If you’re not making mistakes, then you’re not doing anything. I’m positive that a doer makes mistakes.” -John Wooden
